How the comparison is calculated

Hourly and daily options are converted to a monthly figure so every option lines up on the same scale. The calculator uses an average of 52 weeks per year divided across 12 months:

in-home monthly = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 ÷ 12

adult day monthly = daily rate × days per week × 52 ÷ 12

Assisted living, memory care, and nursing home are already monthly, so they are used as entered. Annual cost is simply the monthly figure times 12, and the lowest-cost included option is highlighted for you.

FAQ

Elderly care cost FAQ

How much is in home care cost for elderly parents per month?

At a US-style average of about $30 per hour, in-home senior care for 20 hours a week works out to roughly $2,600 per month. The total scales directly with the hourly rate and the number of hours, so more hours quickly approaches facility costs.

What is the average nursing home cost per month?

A semi-private nursing home room averages around $8,000 per month in the US, making it usually the most expensive option in this comparison. A private room costs even more. Costs vary widely by state and country.

How does assisted living cost per month compare to memory care?

Assisted living averages about $5,000 per month, while memory care for dementia adds specialized staffing and security and averages about $6,500 per month. Both are usually cheaper than a nursing home but more than limited in-home hours.

Is adult day care cheaper than other elderly care options?

Adult day care averages about $95 per day. For a few days a week it is often the lowest-cost option and lets a parent stay home at night, but it does not provide overnight or full-time care.

Why do elderly care costs vary so much?

Care costs depend heavily on your country, state, city, level of care, and the facility or agency. The defaults here are US-style national averages. Always confirm local rates with two or three providers before budgeting.
